Project Vital

What do you do when language communities identify their own Bible translator and are asking Wycliffe to send someone to help them translate the Scriptures but we don’t have anyone to go? For the people of the Milne Bay Province of PNG, Project VITAL (Vernacular Initiative for Translation and Literacy) is one answer.

These village communities are asked to choose and send two or three people to join and work alongside a translator three times a year at a four-week VITAL course. Together, and with experienced staff, they work on Bible study, translating and checking the accuracy of their work. At the end of each course they return to their homes with booklets of the work that has been completed, both Scripture and literacy materials.

Since the beginning of the program twelve language communities have been involved and each translation team has grown deeper in their knowledge of God. Portions of Genesis have been translated and a number of groups have completed Mark’s Gospel. They are currently working on Acts. One participant described VITAL as follows, ‘We are so blessed here at VITAL. At Bible school you learn some things about the Bible but as we translate we look at every word, every verse, every chapter and it gets into our hearts and changes us’.

Project VITAL is an ongoing, productive project dependent on those of us who share the vision to see it through to the end. Will you share this vision to help Papua New Guineans in this way?

Ismaili Translation

The mountainous homeland of Ismaili Muslim people spans the countries of Tajikistan and Afghanistan is . The Aga Khan is their spiritual leader, and he has encouraged them to be an open-minded and educated people. They have lived under many different governments with some degree of local autonomy because of their isolated location. They have had little access to the gospel, with no written material in their own mother tongues. Multimedia such as the 2-hour Jesus film, 2 half-hour testimonies of Muslims who encountered Jesus, and the 90 minute claymation story of Jesus called "The Miracle Maker" (pictured) are great tools for introducing them to Jesus. Work on the last two titles is underway, and requires about $2000 to be finished. 
Bible translation is in the early stages. Funds raised will be used first to finish the DVD titles and then for the ongoing Bible translation. These projects are being carried out by partner organisations and this work is security sensitive.
