We took a wrong turn!!!

We took a wrong turn!!!
- Sav

wrong_turn_savAs we walked out of Ingham, the unthinkable happened!

Deep in conversation, we simply followed the main street south as it swung around to the right and we kept on walking.

1km. 2km. 3km. 4km. Dave commented how quiet it was on the road - not as many trucks as other days - and we were really enjoying it. But still the penny didn't drop.

5km. 6km. 7km. 8km. And then there was a road sign ... but it wasn't the sign we were hoping for. Yikes.

As soon as we realised we were on the wrong road, it all made sense, but we hadn't noticed the wrong turn.

After taking a few minutes to crash out on the grass by the side of the road and come to terms with the consequences of the error of our ways, we got a lift back into town and had to start all over again - on the right road.

We had walked 8km for NOTHING.

In the evening we had a meeting in the Uniting Church and I shared about our 'wrong road' experience, much to the amusement of all present! Our 'wrong road' started out being a great experience until we realised we weren't actually 'on track'. You see, even though we were having a good time, that road was no good to us - we needed to be on the 'right road' because we had a destination and an arrival date to stick to. Walking on that road was a complete waste of time and energy.

In the same way, as God's people, we are on a journey and we have a destination and an arrival date as well ... even though 'no man knows the day or the hour'. And our journey includes a mandate ... 'to preach the gospel of this kingdom in the whole world, as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come' (Matthew 24:14). With over 2000 language groups with nothing of God's word translated, we are not yet at the end!! Let's not get side-tracked and waste our time and energy ... let's stay on the right road and get behind the great task of seeing the gospel message translated into every language.

This episode sounds like something out of Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyon...a really great book to read or movie to watch.

Hi guys! God uses everything for our good. You have estimated 2000 Bible-less folk but God's numbers are different. I agree that the lesson here is really about keeping on the right track with focus on the goal. Good work! Keep it up! Love to you

I am sure that going the wrong way was for a good reason and even if it was to say what you have said on your blog today. To remind us to keep going on the right way which ultimate brings us to God Himself. Keep up the good work and testimony.

Looking for the 'silver lining', it also could mean that the extra kms are prayers for the extra languages on top of the 2000 that still remain Bibleless. 2000 is the rounded figure for the number of languages without God's word - 2000 is a rounded figure for how many km you will have walked. God can use our errors for His good!

Ha ha. I just have to join the Uniting Church folk in laughing out loud about that one. It's happened to a few, I have to say. And just like you Andrew to use your experiences as a teaching tool! Looking forward to seeing you in exactly one week's time in beautiful Ayr (where's Ayr??). No danger of wrong turns down here! See you soon. T

8 Km extra walking was not a total time waste, because one can learn from such mistakes. And one can feel more strongly what it means to be lost, really lost. And to get more moved to compassion for those who don"t know the Only Way Home. The Lord bless you guys.

Thanks for a very timely reminder... we have a destination, a prize. Oh that we would see clearly the road marked out before us!
Not "8km for nothing"!

I recommend a complaint to the local Council (or Main Roads) that their signage sucks. They are innocent but it could make you feel better...

How often in finding the right words or in other aspects of translation is there a track that seems good and right but becomes a dead end? Walking out the analogy! God bless you with His strength today!

Great story and reality. How many of us do this in life.May we turn around and seek first the King, his Kingdom and will. All the other things he has promised to look after.
Keep walking boys with your eyes fixed on the prize and goal.

It probably was a little annoying to you, but how can one help but laugh :-). And again I note that God delights in making something out of 'nothing', a fact we all experience (mostly in hindsight). Love reading your sharings and following your journey. Big Blessings...
